Mazda MX5 Mk1 1.6 or 1.8 Catback Performance 4″ Tail JDM Style Exhaust System

This exhaust system replaces everything from the cat back. It is made from 60mm tube which gives excellent flow and is able to handle high horsepower applications if the car is fitted with a supercharger or a turbo. Gives a better flow rate than the standard exhaust and therefore allows the car to produce more power.

It has a 4″ Japanese-style tailpipe and comes with everything you see in the pictures.

It now comes with a removable baffle in the tailpipe so you can choose to have a sportier exhaust note or a LOUD exhaust.

We recommend using a set of our Green poly mounts with this exhaust, they make fitting the exhaust much easier than using the old ones that are on the car and help reduce sound inside the car.

Fitting notes:

All Mk1 MX5s – both with the 1.6 or the 1.8 engine, for the later MK1s (1997 and 1998) with the longer 470mm cat you will need to buy the adapter pipe.

Some MX5s have a brace on the rear subframe which will either need to be removed or adjusted to fit this exhaust. If you’re not sure send us a picture of the rear diff area of the car and we can advise before you purchase.

This exhaust once fitted will not only increase the power of the vehicle but it can also actually reduce emissions by up to 15% according to research done at Ohio State University. In an article published by Science Daily “A new automobile exhaust system reduces pollution and boosts engine power at the same time. A study showed the new system increased overall engine performance by 5 percent while also cutting emissions by 15 percent.“

How can we achieve this?

Again quoted from Science Daily “When engineers incorporate a number of components into commercial exhaust systems to meet emissions and noise regulations, it’s not unusual for the changes to cut engine performance by about 15 percent. For a six-cylinder, 200-horsepower engine, that means a loss of about 30 horses, and that’s a lot of power.

The typical exhaust system resembles a noisy tangle of pipes fraught with twists, turns, and internal passages. As air whistles through the pipes, pressure waves created by the engine’s pistons reverberate inside, ringing as loud as 190 decibels — well past the human ear’s threshold of pain. Silencers muffle the sound for the outside world, but inside the pipes, the pressure works against the engine, which expends energy to push the exhaust through.”

By optimising the design, reducing the number and severity of the bends, minimising the cross-sectional changes, changing the type of silencers and resonators used we can increase the gas velocity which improves the efficiency of the engine. Improvements in efficiency are what give us the additional power and also reduced emissions.
